Grief Literacy Advocacy
Building Understanding in a Culture That Struggles with Loss
At OncoPsychCare, our Grief Literacy Advocacy initiative works to transform how society understands, acknowledges, and responds to grief. Despite grief being a universal human experience, our culture often lacks the language, understanding, and systems to support those navigating loss. Our advocacy program aims to change this reality through education, training and community engagement.
Our Advocacy Focus
Public Education
We develop and deliver evidence-based resources to enhance grief literacy across communities, workplaces, healthcare settings, and educational institutions. These materials help individuals recognize grief responses, understand their impact, and develop supportive responses to those experiencing loss.
Professional Training
Our specialized training programs equip healthcare providers, mental health professionals, educators, HR professionals, and community leaders with the knowledge and skills to create grief-sensitive environments and provide appropriate support.
Policy Development
We work with organizations and institutions to develop grief-responsive policies that acknowledge the reality of loss and provide meaningful accommodations and support systems for those experiencing grief.
Research Promotion
Through collaborative partnerships with academic institutions, we support research initiatives that deepen our understanding of grief experiences across diverse populations and contexts, with particular attention to grief related to serious illness and cancer.
Why Grief Literacy Matters
Grief literacy transforms both individual and collective experiences of loss by:
- Reducing isolation for those experiencing grief
- Challenging harmful myths about grief “timelines” and “stages”
- Creating supportive environments where grief is acknowledged
- Providing language to express and respond to grief experiences
- Building communities capable of compassionate grief support
