Course Goal:

To enhance understanding of grief as a natural, multifaceted human response and to develop compassionate, evidence-informed skills for supporting grieving individuals, families, and communities.

Course Duration: 6 Modules (Foundational to Applied Practice)

Module 1. Understanding Grief: Foundations of Loss
Key Themes:

Defining grief, mourning, and bereavement

Historical and cultural perspectives on grief

The psychology and neurobiology of loss

Common myths and misconceptions about grieving

Introduction to grief literacy as a public health competency

Reflective journaling, short lecture, reading discussion, quiz

Module 2. Models and Theories of Grief
Key Themes:

Classic frameworks: Kübler-Ross, Worden, Stroebe & Schut

Contemporary approaches: Continuing Bonds, Meaning Reconstruction, Dual Process Model

Grief trajectories: anticipatory, cumulative, disenfranchised, ambiguous loss

The evolving science of adaptation and resilience

Case mapping, model comparison chart, group discussion

Module 3. The Dimensions of Grieving: Psychological, Social, Spiritual
Key Themes:

Emotional and cognitive aspects of grief

Impact of grief on the body: somatic, sleep, and immune changes

Family systems and social networks in grief

Spiritual distress, search for meaning, and post-loss growth

Module 4. Communicating Compassionately with the Bereaved
